Type the word Section into the Find What box and then click the More >> button to expand the Find and Replace options. Click in the Replace With box to put your insertion point there and then click the Special button. Click Section Character from the dropdown list.

Open the first document. Place the cursor where you want the second document to be inserted. From the Insert tab, Text group, click on the down arrow next to Object and choose Text from file. Select the file to be inserted. Click on Insert.

In your document, position the insertion point where you want the special character to appear. Press and hold down the ALT key while you type the four number Unicode value for the character. Note that NUM LOCK must be on, and you have to use the number pad keys to type the Unicode character value.

Place the insertion point where the special character will be inserted. From the Insert command tab, in the Symbols group, click SYMBOL » select More Symbols... Select the Special Characters tab. From the Character scroll box, select the desired character. Click INSERT.

From the Insert tab, click Symbol. Choose the symbol that you want from the drop-down list. If the symbol is not in the list, click More Symbols. In the font box, choose the font you are using, click the symbol you want to insert, and select Insert.

For the section symbol on a Windows computer, you would press and hold the Alt key. Next, type the numbers, 0167, and then release the Alt key. This would create the § symbol in your text. While Windows' Alt keyboard combinations are vast, there are only a few needed in legal drafting.

Most text editors and word processors allow you to type special symbols that do not appear on the keyboard, including foreign language characters and accents. To access these, use the numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard. Make sure the NumLock key is on, and then hold the Alt key.
