The date on which a book or periodical is or is planned to be published.

To setup first insert the Publish Date control, it appears blank. Type in a date or click on the pull-down to see a date selector. Other places in the same document can also have the Publish Date document property. Change the Publish Date in one place and it'll change in all the others automatically.

MLA format does not call for dates in in-text citations. For an MLA works cited page, after the book's title and a period, include the original date of publication, a period and the word "Reprint." The publication date of the cited edition goes in the usual location after the publisher's name.

Thus, if you are citing a work on the web that lists both an original publication date and a last-updated date, use the last-updated date or, if provided instead, the last-reviewed date. Providing the last-updated or last-reviewed date lets your reader know that the information you are citing is current.

For most references, it's pretty straightforward: The date element is the year of publication, found on the copyright page (for books) or the first page of the article (for journals); put it in parentheses and follow with a period.
