Newspapers use datelines when the information for a story is obtained outside the paper's hometown or general area of service. Datelines appear at the beginning of stories and include the name of the city in all capital letters, usually followed the state or territory in which the city is located.

An article primarily includes the following sections: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion.

It follows a simple and consistent format: city name, state abbreviation (or country name if outside the US), and date. For example: NEW YORK, NY (Oct. 15, 2021). If the city name is well-known, you can omit the state or country name.

All but the shortest articles should start with introductory text (the "lead"), which establishes significance, includes mention of significant criticism or controversies, and make readers want to learn more.
