If optimal hygiene and safety are both vital and it is required for precision mechanical balances, then it is recommended to use a pneumatic load cell. Of course, a hydraulic load cell is a better fit in remote locations due to the fact that power supply is not necessary.

Multiply the load cell's reading in millivolts by the full scale weight of the load cell. If the load cell's reading is 27 millivolts, (0.027-volts) and the load cell's maximum sensing weight is 100 pounds, this multiplication will yield 2.7 volt-pounds.

For example, if a load cell has a 5 Volt DC (VDC) excitation voltage and a 0-250 mV output, the resultant ratio is 250mV/5VDC. This equates to 50 mV per Volt. The greater this value, the greater a load cell's signal resolution, which results in a higher signal-tonoise ratio, and thus, greater sensitivity.

The voltage output from the load cell can be calculated from the voltage VE applied to the load cell and the rated output RO. When a load of 500 g (rated capacity) is applied to the load cell, the output voltage is VE RO = 2.0 V 0.7 mV/V = 1.4 mV.

The cell output is rated in millivolts per volt (mV/V) of the difference voltage at full rated mechanical load. So a 2.96 mV/V load cell will provide 29.6 millivolt signal at full load when excited with 10 volts. Typical sensitivity values are 1 to 3 mV/V. Typical maximum excitation voltage is around 15 volts.
