Racking Load. A racking load is the strength load rating for when a pallet is placed in a racked system. Racking load ratings should be taken as an estimation, as a customer's warehouse racking system can be very individualized.

Maintenance and Safe Working Load (S.W.L) Signs are mandatory when installing new pallet racking. If your racking is being accessed by a forklift or it is over 2400mm high you need these signs. We recommend that any racking system should have maintenance and S.W.L signs to comply with the AS 4084 - 2012.

There is no specific legislation that requires a load sign to be placed on racking. However, there is an obligation on an employer to ensure that employees have all the information that is needed to operate the racking system safely.

What Are Load Notices? Load notices are signs which tell end users of racking how to use, how to not to use, and how to safely maintain a particular system. Load notices are vital and need to be clearly displayed. Without them, end users run the risk of overloading their systems.

- The safe working load of each shelf should be taken into consideration when items are stored (risk of sudden failure should weight exceed the safe working load). It is recommended that the safe working load information which is available from the manufacturer at time of purchase is displayed on each shelving unit.

All materials stored in tiers shall be stacked, racked, blocked, interlocked, or otherwise secured to prevent sliding, falling or collapse. The weight of stored materials on floors within buildings and structures shall not exceed maximum safe load limits.

Take that weight of the heaviest load that you will possibly handle and determine how many of those loads you'll be placing on any given beam level. Take the weight and then multiply it by the number of loads you hypothetically intend to store. Then take that number and multiply it by the beam levels per bay.
