Rate limiting is performed by taking the incoming request and identifying the parts of the request that makes it unique to a client. Information such as the IP address that made the connection, a session cookie, other header information or the URL and HTTP method that were used can all be included to identify a client.

Rate limiting can be implemented at the network level, by setting limits on the rate of traffic or on the number of requests made to specific resources, or at the application level, by setting limits on the number of requests made by individual users or clients.

The main use cases for rate limiting are the following: Enforce granular access control to resources. Includes access control based on criteria such as user agent, IP address, referrer, host, country, and world region. Protect against credential stuffing and account takeover attacks.

Changing IP address Many rate limit algorithms rely on a client IP address when deciding to block a request. If you change the IP address or make a server think that the request came from another IP, you will successfully bypass this restriction.

The HTTP 429 Too Many Requests response status code indicates the user has sent too many requests in a given amount of time ("rate limiting"). A Retry-After header might be included to this response indicating how long to wait before making a new request.

Impact: Bypassing the X-RateLimit-Limit header in an API can allow attackers to make unlimited requests, leading to resource exhaustion or other types of attacks.

Setting up an API-Level global rate limit Navigate to the API you want to set the global rate limit on. In the Core Settings tab, navigate to the Rate Limiting and Quotas section. Ensure that Disable rate limiting is unchecked. Enter in your request per second threshold. Save/Update your changes.
