Place your cursor over the box in which you wish to place a check. When the cursor changes from the hand tool to the hand pointer, click your left mouse button to select (check) the box. To undo the selection, left-click your mouse button and the check mark will be removed.

You can press the Alt key in combination with numbers on the numeric keypad to insert a check mark symbol. To insert a check mark symbol in a Word document using Alt: Position the cursor where you want to insert the check mark symbol. Press Alt + 0252 or Alt + 0254 on the numeric keypad.

Create a check mark symbol by pressing the Alt key and typing 0252 using the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard while still pressing the Alt key. After creating the check mark symbol, change the font back to the desired font for text in the document.

Hold down the Alt key and use the number keypad to enter the character code--that's 0252 for the plain checkmark and 0254 for the boxed checkmark. Word will display an odd character (Figure F) to display the checkmark. (You might need to press Num Lock on your keyboard.)

Click on the arrow on the right side of the Bullets button. From the next window, select the None option in the Bullet Library section. With the check box removed, you can proceed to work on the document with the settings that were in place before you undertook the editing process.

Click the Review tab and then click Restrict Editing. Click the Editing Restrictions checkbox. Select Filling in Forms from the drop-down list so readers can check and uncheck the checkboxes in your document.
