In fiscal year 2020-2021, 56 claims were filed, 46 claims were assessed and 36 claims were resolved through negotiations. Working in partnership with First Nations, Canada has settled over 592 specific claims through negotiated settlements since 1973.

This agreement gave the Inuit of the central and eastern Northwest Territories a separate territory called Nunavut. It is the largest Aboriginal land claim settlement in Canadian history.

A land claim is defined as "the pursuit of recognized territorial ownership by a group or individual". The phrase is usually only used with respect to disputed or unresolved land claims. Some types of land claims include aboriginal land claims, Antarctic land claims, and post-colonial land claims.

Modern treaties and self-government Other land-related disputes (called comprehensive land claims) arise in parts of Canada where past treaties were not signed. These claims are addressed through the negotiation of agreements called modern treaties with Indigenous groups and provincial and territorial governments.

Hundreds of specific claims remain outstanding. This includes about 250 accepted for negotiation, 71 claims before the Specific Claims Tribunal and about 160 specific claims are currently under review or assessment.

Claimants argue that they hold ownership of land and resources based upon long-term occupation and use of particular territories. Thus, for a land claim to proceed, title must be ascertained and recognized by a country's legal institutions. In different jurisdictions, recognition of Native title has varied greatly.

From January 1, 2016, to March 31, 2023, 255 claims have been resolved for close to $8.6 billion in compensation. Thirty-four of those claims were in Ontario. Ontario has been settling claims with Indigenous communities since 1983. To date, 63 land claims and other agreements have been reached.
