The Line Item Number (LIN) is a six-character alphanumeric identification of the generic nomenclature assigned to identify nonexpendable and type classified expendable or durable items of equipment during their life cycle authorization and supply management.

Contract Line Item Numbers (CLIN) (FAR Part 4.10) are part of defense contracts that break the contract down by the commodities being procured (labor hours of services, funding for travel, quantity product A, etc.).

Line items represent the work involved in a contract. A line item can represent labor, materials, or anything else that should be listed individually in a contract.

(a) A "Commitment Identification Number (CIN)" refers to a unique number associated with a specific line of accounting. The CIN is used to record a commitment and then match that commitment to the subsequent obligation(s) within the financial management and contracting systems.

However, ELINs are different from CLINs and SLINs in that : ELINs must always have a parent line reference to a CLIN or a SLIN, they can have multiple parent lines, a CLIN can have multiple Exhibits (each Exhibit can have multiple lines).

SLINS are lines that use a 6-character numbering format ? numeric or alphanumeric. The first 4 digits of the SLINs are populated with the parent CLIN number. The next 2 digits are automatically generated, based on whether the SLIN is a Priced sub-line or an Informational sub-line.

Subline items may be used to facilitate tracking of performance, deliverables, payment, and contract funds accounting or for other management purposes. Subline items may be either deliverable or informational.
