To determine if you are eligible to donate we will: Ask about your health and travel. Ask about medicines you are taking or have taken. Ask about your risk for infections that can be transmitted by blood?especially AIDS and viral hepatitis. Take your blood pressure, temperature and pulse.

Blood donors do not receive any payment, and the donated blood is not sold to the hospitals for profit. A blood processing fee, however, is charged for the collection, processing, testing and storage of each unit of blood to ensure it is safe for transfusion. The blood processing fee is based on cost recovery.

You must be in good health at the time you donate. You cannot donate if you have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other infection. If you have recently had a tattoo or body piercing you cannot donate for 6 months from the date of the procedure.

My blood isn't the right type. Every type of blood is needed daily to meet patient needs. If you have a common blood type, there are many patients who need it, so it is in high demand. If you have a less common blood type, there are fewer donors available to give it, so it is in short supply.

Ask the donor if they have any questions, and answer them. Counter-check whether the donor has understood the consent by asking them to repeat the points that may be difficult or important, or by using other words to reiterate the most important issues. Correct any misunderstandings.
