For taxpayers who want to apply a portion of the overpayment to next year's taxes, enter the amount to be applied to the following year on the applicable line. By entering an amount on this line, the taxpayer is elect- ing to apply all or a portion of the current year's overpayment to next year's estimated tax.

You get an overpayment credit when your tax payments exceed what you owe. You'll automatically receive a refund of the credit. However, you can ask us to apply the credit as an advance payment towards next year's taxes instead of sending it to you as a refund.

The CRA will refund the excess contributions to you or use them to reduce your balance owing. If you were a resident of Quebec on December 31, 2022, line 44800 does not apply to you. Claim the excess amount on your Revenu Quebec Income Tax Return.

Go to Screen 59, Amended Return (1040-X). Scroll down to the Miscellaneous Information section. Select the box Apply 1040-X overpayment to 20YY estimated tax. Scroll down to the Federal Income Tax Return section. Enter the amount to be applied in Overpayment applied to 20YY estimated tax (75).
