ELECT stands for Early Learning for Every Child Today.

Objective, factual written observations include the following: Descriptions of actions. Descriptions of children's vocalizations. Direct quotes of children's language. Descriptions of facial expressions and gestures. Descriptions of creations (e.g., stacked blocks, scribble drawings, finger-painted pictures)

Through play, children engage with the people, places and objects around them to form their understanding of the world and how they fit into it. Play helps to develop a child's knowledge and skills, and prepares them for a lifetime of learning both in school and beyond.

Documentation can be written as in taking observation notes on what you observe the child doing, or through dictation as you transcribe what the child explains about a picture, event or experience. Other forms of documentation can include photography, tape recording, and videoing.

ELECT helps clarify these developmental markers for each age group and shows the approximate skills they should be learning at each age group. The domains are Social, Emotional, Communication, language, and literacy, Cognitive, and Physical.
