When someone shares a Word document with you, the email you receive includes a link that opens the document in your web browser: in Word for the web. Select Edit Document > Edit in Browser. If anyone else is working on the document, you'll see their presence and the changes they're making.

Restrict Editing Click Review > Protect > Restrict Editing. Under Editing restrictions, select Allow only this type of editing in the document, and make sure the list says No changes (Read only). Select Yes, Start Enforcing Protection.

Co-edit a document After you share your document, you can work on that file at the same time with others. For the best experience, work together in Word for the web and see real-time changes. Under Share, you will see the names of who else is also editing the file.

To work together in Word for the web, you edit a document as you normally would. If others are also editing it, Word for the web alerts you to their presence, and shows you the paragraph they're working on. There's no special co-authoring mode and no command to begin co-authoring.

When additional users open the same document, they will be able to edit and collaborate in real-time. Even if a file is locked, other users who open it in Office Online will simply join the same active co-authoring session.

With Microsoft 365 and OneDrive or SharePoint, multiple people can work together on a Word document, Excel spreadsheet, or PowerPoint presentation. When everyone is working at the same time, that's called co-authoring.
