Selecting the right grit sandpaper For heavy sanding and stripping, you need coarse sandpaper measuring 40 to 60 grit; for smoothing surfaces and removing small imperfections, choose 80 to 120 grit sandpaper. For finishing surfaces smoothly, use extra fine sandpaper with 360 to 400grit.

The grit is a rating of the size of abrasive materials on the sandpaper. The higher the grit number, the smoother the finish; the lower the grit number, the coarser the finish but quicker the material removal rate. 40 grit: Coarse. 80 grit: Medium.

The Coarser Abrasive Grades Grit Levels P40 & P60 ? Most projects won't need these sandpaper grades. You won't want to use regular sandpaper sheets for wet sanding. The abrasive grit on regular sandpaper loads up with the material being sanded. This, plus the grains, will usually cause more scratches on the material. You'll want to use sandpaper that's made specifically for this method.

Dry sandpaper is also called dry sandpaper. Compared with waterproof sandpaper, the gap between sand grains of dry sandpaper is larger, and the debris produced by grinding is larger. Because of the large gap, the debris will fall off by itself in the process of using, so it does not need to be used with water.

#320 Grit: Ultra-Fine Ultra-fine sandpaper grit is used to achieve another level of smoothness on all types of materials. With wood, ultra-fine grits usually are reserved for smoothing painted surfaces between coats.
