In footnotes, information is separated by commas, while in the bibliography, it is separated by periods. In footnotes, the author's first name is listed first, while in the bibliography, the author's last name is listed first. The titles of books and journals are put in italics.

Add footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to add the footnote. Click Insert > Insert Footnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the footnote mark at the bottom of the page. Type the footnote text.

Footnotes. Use the following symbols in the order shown to indicate footnotes: *, ?, ?, §, ¶, #. If the table requires >6 footnotes, use double (e.g., **, ??) symbols.

A footnote or endnote is usually indicated by a superscript number immediately following the text or phrase to which the note refers. Some requirements demand other symbols instead of numbers if there are a few footnotes in the document. For example, asterisks (*) or daggers(?) are used instead.

Lower-case letters are used as footnote indicators in most tables and figures (see Tables/Notes to tables). In statistical publications containing tables with numerous footnotes, numbers are normally used instead of letters.

Click the reference number or mark in the body of the text or click Insert > Show Footnotes(for endnotes, click Insert > Show Endnotes).

Using the Notes drop-down list at the top of the Footnotes pane, choose Footnote Continuation Notice. The current notice appears in the window. (Note that the notice might be originally blank, so you might not see anything in the window.) Change the notice as desired.
