Multi-currency payment processing occurs when your business can accept credit cards from customers in foreign currencies. If your business charges customers in more than one currency (for example in US dollars and Canadian dollars) you are doing multi-currency processing.

Settlement currency is the currency a vendor selects to be paid out in and the currency in which funds are sent to the vendor's bank account. You can have one settlement currency or multiple, depending on the functionality of your payment processor and the availability of accounts.

At present, banks have to deposit Foreign Demand Draft (FDD) to the central bank through an employee to carry out such transactions. FDD is a channel used by banks to facilitate inter-bank fund transfers using the central bank channel, which requires one working day for settlement.

A corporate FX transaction involves a bank, on behalf of their corporate client, paying for the currency it sold at an agreed rate to another bank and receiving a different currency in return for the funds being cleared and settled in the local clearings.

Clearing involves network operators routing messages and other information among financial institutions to facilitate payments between payers and payees. Interbank settlement is the discharge of obligations that arise in connection with faster payments either in real-time or on a deferred schedule.

If there are any gains or losses pertaining to the foreign exchange transaction, it is applied to the settlement currency.
