Mount Whitney Zone Map Overnight permits are required for all multi day trips in the wilderness. This includes outside the RED zone, camping at Lone Pine Lake, and trips that will pass through the Whitney Zone to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park.

If you plan to hike Half Dome, you must have a permit. For day hikers, permits are available by lottery in March, with a limited number available two days in advance. Backpackers, including those who want to camp in Little Yosemite Valley, should request a Half Dome permit with their wilderness permit.

This fee pays for park rangers checking for Half Dome permits and providing Half Dome visitors with hiking and safety information. The $10 fee is fully refundable if you cancel your permit by pm Pacific time the day before your hiking date or if the cables are not up on the date for which your permit is valid.

Permits & Regulations: A permit is required for day use and overnight use. For single-day trips, you'll need a Mt. Whitney Zone Day Use Permit. Overnight trip permits are available via recreation.gov; select the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek (JM34) as your entry trailhead.

Hikers must display a parking permit on the dash of their vehicle with ?Not to Exceed Parking Date? visible while parked at the portal. Only groups with a wilderness permit that starts at Whitney Portal will be issued a parking permit. Day hikers will be issued a one day parking permit for the date of their hike.

Whitney permit lottery, and only 34% of those were successful in receiving a permit for either their first choice date or an alternate date. During the quota season (May 1 - November 1), there are 100 permits available each day for day use, and 60 per day for overnight use.
