Changing the Way Footnotes Are Numbered Make sure the References tab is selected on the ribbon. Click the small downward-pointing arrow at the lower-right corner of the Footnotes group.Make sure the Footnotes radio button is selected. Change the Start At value to reflect where you want Word to start numbering.

Insert footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Remove or change a footnote or endnote separator The Footnotes pane appears at the bottom of your document. You can edit the color or style of the separator by choosing options on the Home tab, or, to delete the separators, click Footnote Separator in the Footnotes list, and then select and delete the separator line.

Select over the Footnote Separator line, and if required, the extra empty space you want to delete. Press your Delete key. The Footnote Separator line, and any extra empty paragraphs you selected, will now be deleted.

By default the Footnote Continuation Separator is full margin width, but you can resize it by adding paragraph indents; right-click, choose Paragraph?, and increase the Left and Right indents as desired.
