Dispose Email License For Free

In the admin center, go to the Billing > Licenses page. Select a product. Select the check boxes of the users for whom you want to unassign licenses. Select Unassign licenses. In the Unassign licenses box, select Unassign.

In the admin center, go to the Billing > Your products page, and select the Products tab. Select the subscription from which you want to remove licenses. On the details page, select Remove licenses.

If you remove a user's license, the user mailbox will no longer be able to sign in and use Exchange Online or Office 365. The user mailbox will remain in Exchange Online until it is deleted, permanently removed or purged by the Office 365 admin.

If you remove a user's license but don't delete the account, you retain access to the content in the user's OneDrive site. If you delete their account you have 30 days to access a former user's OneDrive data. If you don't restore a user account within 30 days their OneDrive content is deleted.

Similarly, removing the Exchange Online license will automatically remove the Exchange mailbox from the user. This article details how you can remove an Office 365 mailbox (but still keep the user account it's assigned to).

When the license is removed from a mailbox without following other deprovisioning steps, this may leave the mailbox in a hard-deleted state. In order to recover the mailbox, the user must relicense the Azure user object. That will reconnect the mailbox as long as it's within 30 days from the disconnect date.

What happens to a user's data when you remove their license? When a license is removed from a user, Exchange Online data that is associated with that account is held for 30 days. After the 30-day grace period, the data is deleted and can't be recovered.
