Go to the Insert tab, click Quick Parts, then select Field. Select TOC from the list of field names on the left, then click the Field Codes button. Click the Options button at the bottom left of the Field window to open the Field Options window. On the Field Options window, select \\b, then click Add to Field.

To build a Custom Table of Contents, you need to tell Word what you want, and this is where you do it. Click REFERENCES > Table of Contents > Custom Table of Contents. Make your changes in the Table of Contents dialog box. You'll see what they look like in the Print Preview and Web Preview areas.

Once you've applied heading styles, you can insert your table of contents in just a few clicks. Navigate to the References tab on the Ribbon, then click the Table of Contents command. Select a built-in table from the menu that appears, and the table of contents will appear in your document.

First add captions to your figures, and then use the Insert Table of Figures command on the References tab. Word then searches the document for your captions and automatically adds a list of figures, sorted by page number.

Word does not automatically update the Table of Contents as you type, but if you make changes to your document and need to update the Table, you can do this quickly by selecting/highlighting your Table of Contents, and then going to the "References" tab on the menu and clicking the "Update Table" button next to "Table

On the toolbar ribbon, select References. Near the left end, select Insert Table of Contents. (Or select Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents. The table of contents is inserted, showing the headings and page numbering in your document.

To do that, we'll use a custom style. Select the text that we want to appear in the Table of Contents.Open Styles gallery > Create a Style > OK.
