Double click the header or footer area to make it active. This also activates the Header & Footer Tools section on Word's Ribbon. On the Design tab of that section, select the Different First Page check box. This action removes the header and footer from the first page.

If you're not in the Header and Footer view, select the Insert tab, click Footer and click Edit Footer. If Same as Previous or Link to Previous is visible just above the footer, remove it by clicking Link to Previous in the Design tab's Navigation section. Make sure the Design tab is still selected.

Word includes a very easy-to-use shortcut that allows you to jump right to the header: Alt+V, H. (Press the Alt and V key at the same time, then press H. You can continue holding down the Alt key as you press H or not, it is up to you.) A helpful mnemonic for this shortcut is "Alt View Headers," and it works great.

To allow this, you must disable the feature that repeats footers across sections. Double-click a footer that follows a section break. A tab labeled "Same as Previous" appears above its right side. Click "Design" in the Word ribbon. Click "Link to Previous" in the ribbon's Navigation group to deselect it.

Double-click the header or footer area (near the top or bottom of the page) to open the Header & Footer tab. Check Different First Page to see if it's selected. If not: Select Different First Page.

Double-click in the header area to open the Header pane. This will display the Header & Footer Tools Design tab. Scroll down and click in the Footer. In the Navigation group, click Link to Previous to turn it off.

Double-click the header or footer you want to edit, or select Header or Footer, and then select Edit Header or Edit Footer. Add or change text for the header or footer or do any of the following: To remove the first page header or footer Select Different First Page.
