A merge field is where you want to insert the information from a data source into a main document. Merge fields appear with chevrons (« A») around them. An example would be: Dear A«FirstNameA». Address Block. A group of merge fields that make up an address in a mail merge document.

Select the mail merge field, such as Company, as shown in this example. Press Alt + F9 to reveal the field coding. Edit the field by inserting a switch code to the end of the field. Press Alt + F9 again.

Open desired Word document. Place cursor where merge field is desired. Press CTRL and F9 together and { } in gray will appear. Right-click on the { } field and select Edit Field. In pop-up box, select Mail Merge from Categories and then MergeField from Field Names.

Open a Microsoft Word document. Click where you want to place a merge field. In the Insert tab, click Quick Parts and then Field2026. Under Categories, select (All). Under Field names, select MergeField. Type the name of the merge field under Field name. Click OK.

Click or tap where you want the merge field. Choose the down-arrow under Insert Merge Field, and select a field. If you don't see your field name in the list, choose Insert Merge Field. Choose Database Fields to see the list of fields that are in your data source. Choose Insert.

Navigate to the location in the Word document where you want to insert a field. Click the Insert tab in the Ribbon. Click Quick Parts. Select Field. In the list of Field names, select a field. Under Field properties, select any properties or options you want.
