Conclusion. The Azure DevOps Server provides two different types of pipelines to perform build, deployment, testing and further actions. A Build Pipeline is used to generate Artifacts out of Source Code. A Release Pipeline consumes the Artifacts and conducts follow-up actions within a multi-staging system.

As a standard practice, the numbers give the following information: First Number: This is the major release number and indicates major incompatible changes or additions to the product. Second Number: This is the minor release number and indicates minor changes to the product, or improvements to a functionality.

Go to the Pipelines tab, and then select Releases. Select the action to create a New pipeline. If a release pipeline is already created, select the plus sign ( + ) and then select Create a release pipeline. Select the action to start with an Empty job.

Visit your Azure DevOps team, select Releases, then New > New release pipeline.

You can change this naming scheme by editing the release name format mask. In the Options tab of a release pipeline, edit the Release name format property in the General page.

Select trigger: Set the trigger that will start the deployment to this stage automatically. Select "Release" to deploy to the stage every time a new release is created. Use the "Stage" option to deploy after deployments to selected stages are successful. To allow only manual deployments, select "Manual".
