Contract effective date means the date agreed upon by the parties for beginning the period of performance under the contract. In no case shall the effective date precede the date on which the contracting officer or designated higher approval authority signs the document.

The basic elements required for the agreement to be a legally enforceable contract are: mutual assent, expressed by a valid offer and acceptance; adequate consideration; capacity; and legality.

While a contract does not have to be dated in order to be valid and enforceable, it is a good idea to do so. Dating a contract will help you to positively identify it later if you need to and will help you place it in its proper chronological context. Also, it is legal in Michigan to predate a contract.

The contract format on the other hand refers to the aspects of the agreement that make it binding. Depending on the type of contract that the parties are entering into, the contract format may change. But most contracts include details of the offer and acceptance of the offer as well as the consideration.

In the most formal writing, such as contracts, invitations, plaques and presentation documents, it is usual to write out the entire date in words. Days and months are capitalized, but dates and years are not. . . . on this sixteenth day of June, nineteen hundred and ninety-seven . . .

For example, if you date a document as 16 January 2020, record the year in full, even if you use a numerical abbreviation: 16/1/2020.
