Go to Insert > Page Numbers. Select a position (left, center, or right, and header or footer). Select Include Page Count to show total number of pages too, such as page 7 of 9.

Use the Built-In Headers and Footers in Word Go to the Header & Footer section of the Insert tab on the ribbon bar. Click Header or Footer, then review the options in the drop-down box.Select the header or footer style you want, and it will appear in your document.

On the status bar, click the Page Layout View button. Select the header or footer text you want to change. On the Home tab in the Font group, set the formatting options that you want to apply to the header / footer. When you're done, click the Normal view button on the status bar.

My method: open up the footer (or header if that's where your page number is) drag-select the page number. right-click on it. hit Format Page Numbers. click on the Continue from Previous Section radio button under Page numbering.

Go to Insert > Header or Footer. Choose from a list of standard headers or footers, go to the list of Header or Footer options, and select the header or footer that you want. Or, create your own header or footer by selecting Edit Header or Edit Footer. When you're done, select Close Header and Footer or press Esc.
