The font size of the document can be changed by specifying the font size within the square brackets of the \documentclass[..]{ ..} command. If adding font size in addition to paper type, add a comma between the two specifications.

Just put \small before the equation and \normalsize after it if you want to shrink the font, but it's usually better to use an ams multi-line equation environment than to change font size.
