In a settlement hierarchy, the most important settlement is at the top of the hierarchy. Cities are at the top of the hierarchy because of their high populations and their many goods and services. Hamlets and villages are at the bottom of the hierarchy. There will be many more hamlets and villages compared to cities.

A settlement hierarchy is when settlements are put in an order and classified based on their size and/or the range of services that they provide for people. The higher up the hierarchy you go, there are fewer settlements but they increase in their size in terms of population and the number of services provided.

The generally accepted order of the hierarchy is: Isolated dwelling (>10 people) Hamlet (>100 people) Village (100-1,000 people) Small town (1,000-20,000 people) Large town (20,000-100,000 people) City (100,000-one million people) Large city or conurbation (<1,000,000 people)

The structure/pattern of rural settlements refers to the layout of the streets and the arrangement of houses and other functions in rural settlements. It is related to its basic form, environment, and culture. Three patterns are most common: linear, circular or square, and cross shaped.

Settlements that provide more goods and services than do other places are called higher-order central places. Lower-order central places have small market areas and provide goods and services that are purchased more frequently than higher-order goods and services.

Megalopolis or Megacity ? a supercity consists of a group of conurbations, containing more than ten million residents in total. Conurbation or Global city ? an extremely large city consists of a group of metropolises, containing between three and ten million residents.

A settlement hierarchy ranks human population centers by size, population, and expected availability of services. Smaller settlements are at the bottom of the hierarchy, starting with the smallest dwellings with only a few people, and the world's largest cities and conurbations are at the top.
