So I went to Advanced ->Document Processing ->Bates Numbering and selected remove. That removed the Bates number.

But, consistent with The Bluebook, the first citation should make it very clear what is being referenced, such as (Bates Jones000001) or (Bates d123-002), and subsequent consecutive cites should follow the usual practice of Id. followed by the page number, such as (Id. 000017) or (Id. -017).

To remove Bates numbers from a PDF file: On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Marks group, click the arrow next to Bates Number and click Remove Bates Numbering. Click OK at the confirmation prompt, and the tool will scan the document and remove all instances of Bates numbering.

While the original Bates stamps only used numbers (up to a maximum of 9999), there is no set format for Bates numbering. It may be purely numeric or alphanumeric. Either way, Bates numbering is essentially a paper-based method, most useful for printed productions or page-based images.

Add Bates numbering Choose Tools > Edit PDF. The Edit PDF toolset is displayed in the secondary toolbar. In the secondary toolbar, choose More > Bates Numbering > Add. In the Bates Numbering dialog box, click Add Files, and choose Add Files, Add Folders, or Add Open Files.
