Combine Footnote Text For Free

Do not place multiple footnotes at the same point in your text (e.g. 1, 2, 3). If you need to cite multiple sources in one sentence, you can combine the citations into one footnote, separated by semicolons: 1. Hulme, Romanticism and Classicism; Eliot, The Waste Land; Woolf, Modern Fiction, 11.

And there is no out of the box feature available in Word to let us merge multiple footnotes, you may need to manually create a new footnote and insert it to your document.

On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.

In the Footnote layout section, click to open the drop-down menu next to Columns and choose the number of columns you'd like to use for footnotes. If you choose 3 columns your footnotes automatically break into three evenly-spaced columns, and subsequent footnotes stack on top of each other, in the three-column format.

You're able to reference footnotes multiple times in Microsoft Word by using cross-references. However, cross-references have a minor limitation if you insert another footnote above the original one, the footnote number will update, automatically, immediately, but the cross-reference number will not.

To do so: Insert your first (primary) footnote as normal. Position the insertion point in the document where you want the secondary reference to the footnote. Choose Insert Reference Cross-reference.Using the Reference Type drop-down list, choose Footnote.Select the footnote you want used for this reference.

Click inside any footnote in the document. Click the Home tab. From the Select dropdown in the Editing group, choose Select All Text With Similar Formatting (No Data), as shown in Figure D. Press F9 and then click Yes (once for each footnote, which is a bit tedious).
