Classify Signature Title For Free

You may be alerted by the bold banner line at the top and bottom of the document declaring the document is Top Secret. Or you might notice a few lines at the bottom of the page that indicate when the information will be declassified. These are both examples of markings applied to classified information.

27a2 Conspicuously place the overall classification at the top and bottom of the page. 27a2 If the document contains more than one page, place the overall marking at the top and bottom of the outside of the front cover, on the title page, on the first page, and on the outside of the back cover (if any).

Required markings are: (1) The overall classification of the document. (2) The agency, office of origin, and date of the document. (3) Identification of the source(s) of classification of the information contained in the document and, for originally classified information, a concise reason for classification.

The common objective of these directives is to protect classified information from unauthorized disclosure to potential adversaries who may wish to attack U.S. security interests, harm the American people, or develop weapons of mass destruction.

(U) The CLASSIFICATION AUTHORITY BLOCK will identify the individual who created the document, the source of classification, and the declassification instructions. (TS) There is no difference in the rules when marking a document electronically.

Each paragraph containing FOUO information shall be marked with the abbreviation FOUO in parentheses at the beginning of the FOUO portion. Material other than paper documents (for example, slides, computer media, films, etc.)

To mark an email containing classified information, you must apply all the standard markings. On emails, the Classification Authority Block may be on a single line instead of three. And while the subject line of an email appears outside the banner line markings, it always requires a portion marking.
