Claim Insert Number Fields For Free

Highlight the SEQ you want to reference. Under the "Insert" tab, select "Bookmark" (and create a bookmark). Then, in the location in the text where you want to reference the SEQ number, click "Cross-reference" (also under the "Insert" tab), select reference type "Bookmark", and insert the desired bookmark.

Click File > Options > Display, and then under Always show these formatting marks on the screen, select the Hidden text check box.

The Quick Access Toolbar area of the Word Options dialog box. In the list of Categories, select Commands Not in the Ribbon. Scroll through the long list of commands and select View Field Codes from the list. Click Add.

Insert your table as you normally would. Select the cells in the table that you want to have numbered. Display the Home tab of the ribbon. Click the Numbering tab, in the Paragraph group. Word adds numbering, automatically, to the selected cells.

Click the Insert tab in the Ribbon and then click Quick Parts in the Text group. Select Field. In the list of Field names on the left, select DocProperty. Under Field properties, select a property name. To view the codes for a field in the Field box, click Field Codes.

It's easy to enter a SEQ field manually. Begin by pressing Ctrl+F9. When Word displays the blank field, enter seq list1, as shown in Figure A. List1 is a required argument; you can use any descriptive name you like as long as it begins with an alpha character.
