Logging the Right Callsign For your QSO to be confirmed via LoTW, it must match the information your QSO partner submits. In particular, the callsign you log must match the callsign your QSO partner uses to submit your QSO. the callsign you use to submit your QSO must match the callsign your QSO partner logs.

Official Log Book The logbook is considered to be a running log of all official events such as Arrival / Departure of the vessel to/from the port, Draughts, Freeboards, Onboard Emergency Drills, Crew onboard, Fuel/Fresh Water ROB, Master's Handing Over/Taking Over, etc.

A Radio log with adherence to the SOLAS Ch V and Merchant Shipping regulations is required to be maintained onboard most merchant ships / vessels. A synopsis of all interactions/communications related to Distress, Urgency or Safety must be entered clearly along with the ship's position, date and times.

The radio log must contain a summary of communications relating to distress, urgency and safety messages. The summary must include dates and times in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), details of the vessels involved and their positions.

Log records in the LoTW database are automatically compared so that when a contact at a particular time, operating mode, and frequency band is claimed by both participating amateurs (who both must have submitted their logs), a "QSL" (confirmation) is declared for a later award claim, e.g., for contacts with all U.S.

A "QSO" is a contact, a "QSL" is that contact is confirmed, in LoTW it is confirmed by the other party. Until the contact is confirmed it remains a "QSO".
