Footnotes or headnotes: In tables, footnotes are attached to specific cells, including cells that contain column headings or row headings. However, if the contents of a footnote apply to the entire table, it is best to use a headnote, which typically appears after the title of the table but before its body.

Using footnotes for citations This means that if you want to cite a source, you add a superscript number at the end of the sentence that includes the information from this source. This number corresponds to a footnote or endnote citation, where you include information such as the author, title of work, date, etc.

Format your citations in accordance with the court's legal citation style guidelines--typically either ALWD or Bluebook. Cases should be cited with the case name underlined, followed by a comma and the citation to the court reporter, and ended with the date of the decision in parenthesis.
