ENCs are produced for 6 navigational purposes, ranging from a small-scale one incorporating various information covering a vast area to a large-scale one precisely indicating the information within a limited area necessary for vessels' anchoring and berthing.

ECDIS complies with IMO Regulation V/19 & V/27 of SOLAS convention as amended, by displaying selected information from a System Electronic Navigational Chart (SENC). ECDIS equipment complying with SOLAS requirements can be used as an alternative to paper charts.

You can download an individual ENC and view it in a free viewer like Caris Easy View or use the online ENC viewer hosted on NOAA's Office of Coast Survey website. The ENC Viewer is an especially useful tool in that it allows you to query features by clicking on them.

From start up-Menu (on the left bottom section in chartco), click on Corrections. Click on ENC (top bar) and corrections (Right side bar). This list will show you the pending corrections to your active cells. Click on the Collect and transfer to ECDIS at the bottom of the screen.

Advantages of ECDIS over conventional Paper Charts:Continuous monitoring of the ship's position. When interfaced with ARPA/RADAR, target can be monitored continuously. If two position fixing system are available, the discrepancy in two systems can be identified. Charts can be corrected with help of CD/Online.

Charts on ECDIS need to be updated and corrected on a regular basis. Unlike paper charts where the procedure involves manual insertion of the corrections, correction to ENCs are made automatically. ECDIS allows updating the existing charts and installing new charts too.

Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) are vector data sets that support all types of marine navigation.
