A certification is a credential that you earn to show that you have specific skills or knowledge. They are usually tied to an occupation, technology, or industry. Certifications are usually offered by a professional organization or a company that specializes in a particular field or technology.

Since 1995, Texas law has allowed school districts to issue a school district teaching permit (SDTP) to someone who does not hold a teaching certificate (Texas Education Code §21.055). A teacher employed on a school district teaching permit is not certified by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

The Department of Education-National Capital Region (NCR) issued Regional Memo 78, s. 2018 that requires all private schools in the region to strictly comply with the prescribed license for all its teaching personnel, subject to exceptions provided by law.

Certification area means the specific educational subject matter and grade ranges that a teacher is qualified to teach, the specific level of administration and grade ranges that an administrator is qualified to lead, or the specific role in which a support professional is qualified to serve.

A Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP) is a process by which a school or district can hire a teacher candidate to fill a need in a designated shortage area. Special education has been identified as a shortage area in Connecticut.

In any Connecticut district, you must hold a Bachelor's degree to be a substitute teacher. You will be required to submit copies of transcripts showing you obtained a Bachelor's degree. If you are going to be in an assignment for 40 or more consecutive days, you must be certified to teach in that particular assignment.

A Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP) may be requested by the employing agent of a board of education if a position cannot be filled by an appropriately certified candidate. An application for issuance of a DSAP cannot be initiated by the applicant.
