On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click Show/Hide to show all formatting marks including page breaks. Double-click the page break to select it, then press Delete.

Page numbers and section breaks are integrally linked with each other. Section breaks separates the document into different sections so that the page numbers will display on the correct page. Without using section breaks you cannot choose on which page the numbering starts.

Click into your document where you want the break to happen. Navigate to the Page Layout tab. Click on Breaks to open a list of available page breaks. Choose your desired break and insert it into your document by clicking on it once.

On the Insert tab, click the Page Number icon, and then click Page Number. Select a location, and then pick an alignment style. Word automatically numbers every page, except designated title pages.

You can use any other format instead. Select between the intro and the body of the document and go to Layout > Breaks > Next Page. In the header for the body section, deselect Link to Previous. ... Go to Header & Footer > Page Number, and then click Page Number. Choose the position and alignment of page numbers.

To get continuous page numbering, place the insertion point on the page following the section break. On the Insert tab, click Page Number, and then click Format Page Numbers. Select "Continue from previous section," and click OK. To count the number of pages in the document minus 2, you can use { = { NUMPAGES } - 2 }.

After inserting the section breaks, place the cursor in the header of the section for which you wish to continue the page number. In the Header & Footer tab, go to Page Numbering. 2. Select Continue from previous section option as shown below.
