The original purpose was to authenticate a document, or to prevent interference with a package or envelope by applying a seal which had to be broken to open the container (hence the modern English verb "to seal", which implies secure closing without an actual wax seal).

A medieval seal was used to prove that a document was really from the person or group that it said it was from. Not everyone sealed a document with their own personal seal. Seals have designs which show us what people wanted to say about themselves and the institutions that they were involved in.

One that is under seal is a written set of promises deriving their validity from the form alone. Its only requirement is that it be signed, have a seal, and be delivered. The presence of the word "seal" near the signature or printed form has been enough to create a contract under seal.

Under common law, documents that were signed under seal were considered more reliable and therefore given greater deference and protection under the law primarily in the form of a longer statute of limitations ? much longer. In some states, the statute of limitations for contracts signed under seal is 20 years.

The seal is used to execute a legal document or guarantee the document's authenticity. A seal is unique to a sealer and is used by government agencies, corporations and notaries public to show that the document is validly executed, acknowledged or witnessed. The word ?SEAL? at the end of (or below) a signature line means 'signature'. For example, a mortgage note or Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac Texas Deed of Trust will have ?(Seal)? at the end of the line for the borrower's signature. A person's signature is considered their seal.

If a case involves a sensitive matter, or a juvenile party in a civil case (like a car wreck), then that may be reason for the court to file documents under seal. Likewise, the case may be of such a sensitive nature that the court decides that the court documents need to be sealed.
