Blueprint Required Field Settlement For Free

No, settlements do NOT matter at all, aside from Preston/first 34 quests and Bugthesda's shiny new toy, they're literally pointless dross, add nothing to the game or the lore, and are not utilized anything like their potential.

Ignoring a settlement can make it turn against you and attack your other settlements. If you don't help defend them their happiness goes down. If their happiness goes down too far you lose that settlement have have to do a quest to get it back, so you can't harvest resources from that workbench.

The point of settlements is to create a safe haven for settlers and the player. Gamewise, It gives you a drop point for your salvage. Create supply lines between the settlements, and you can craft/upgrade your gear in any settlement. Settlements produce water/food which you can sell for caps.

Most of the time a well-defended settlement (where you've set up turrets and walls and given your settlers good weapons) can take care of itself, but there's no real loss if you can't get to it in time. A damaged settlement will repair itself after a while, though the settlers get snarky if you don't help them.
