Bates numbering is a method of indexing legal documents for easy identification and retrieval. Each page of each document is assigned a unique Bates number that also indicates its relationship to other Bates-numbered documents. Bates numbers appear as headers or footers on the pages of each PDF in the batch.

Important Bates stamps applied from other PDF programs or created with other tools may not be recognized by the program. You should visually confirm stamp removal. Select Edit > Insert > Bates Numbering > Remove to permanently remove Bates numbers from currently open files.

Place the cursor in the box labeled ?Right Footer Text.? 6. Click ?Insert Bates Number.? The system will default to inserting 6 Digits and start at number one. Click ?Ok.? 7. Click ?Ok? a second time and the document will now be numbered sequentially.

To remove Bates numbers from a PDF file: On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Marks group, click the arrow next to Bates Number and click Remove Bates Numbering. Click OK at the confirmation prompt, and the tool will scan the document and remove all instances of Bates numbering.

Select the Edit ribbon. Click "Insert," then "Bates Numbering," and Add. Click "Add Files" in the new dialog box and select all the files that you wish to number. You can also apply the scheme to any documents currently open in Power PDF.

You cannot edit Bates page numbering after you've added it to a document. You can, however, delete Bates numbering and apply a different Bates numbering formula.
