Place your bottle in warm water to heat through. You can use a jug of warm water from the tap or a bottle warmer. Using a microwave to heat your bottles is not advised because microwaves heat food stuffs unevenly, creating hot spots.

The safest way to transport formula is to take cooled, boiled water and the powdered formula in separate containers. But if you need to transport bottles of formula already mixed with water, make sure the formula is icy cold when you leave the house. Carry it in a thermal baby bottle pack or a cool bag with ice packs.

The wrong balance of formula and water can cause nutritional deficiencies or dehydration. In the most severe cases, it can lead to a stroke, seizure, coma or even death for an infant.

Like tap water, bottled water isn't sterile, so it will need to be boiled before you use it to prepare a feed. Always use boiled water at a temperature of at least 70C when you prepare a feed. Remember to let the feed cool before you give it to your baby.

Ready-made formula in a bottle doesn't need any mixing, but formula manufacturer Similac still recommends giving the bottle a shake before feeding, in case of any separation.You can stir the formula rather than shaking it, but only if you stir thoroughly enough to mix well.
