Verizon has been driving adoption of STIR/SHAKEN, an industry-wide effort that helps verify that a call is in fact from the number displayed on the Caller ID and not spoofed.Verizon is now exchanging STIR/SHAKEN-enabled calls with wireless carriers that collectively represent around 80% of the U.S. wireless industry.

As part of Bandwidth's STIR/SHAKEN roadmap, we provide an Inbound Verification (VERSTAT) feature. With this feature, Bandwidth customers can receive STIR/SHAKEN verification results for inbound calls via SIP headers. This is an optional feature that can be enabled in the Bandwidth Dashboard at no additional charge.

What is SHAKEN/STIR? SHAKEN/STIR is a caller authentication framework meant to help restore trust by reducing fraudulent robocalls and illegal phone number spoofing. SHAKEN stands for Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs, and STIR stands for Secure Telephone Identity Revisited.

The STIR system aims to add information to the SIP headers that allow the endpoints along the system to positively identify the origin of the data. This does not directly prevent the ability for a robocaller to spoof a caller ID, but it does allow upstream points to decide whether or not to trust that ID.

In the STIR/SHAKEN framework, originating service providers are responsible for authenticating calls. they originate onto the telephone network. This is done by digitally assigning an encrypted attestation. rating asserting the degree of confidence that the caller is entitled to use the indicated phone number.

Basically what SHAKEN/STIR does is verify calls that are coming to your phone. Robocallers have turned to neighborhood spoofing or replicating a number within your area code that looks familiar to you so there's a better chance of picking up the phone.
