There are three primary types of aeronautical charts used for VFR navigation. All three types of charts may be referred to as sectional charts, but this is not completely accurate. Private pilot candidates should understand the difference between the three types of sectional charts: VFR Terminal Area Charts.

VFR Terminal Area Charts (TAC). While similar to sectional charts, TACs have more detail because the scale is larger. The TAC should be used by pilots intending to operate to or from airfields within or near Class B or Class C airspace. Areas with TAC coverage are indicated by a ? on the Sectional Chart indexes.

56-day update cycle These are the most popular charts, including VFR sectionals and IFR approach plates. Because they are used for preflight planning and in-flight navigation, they are regularly updated to show the most recent information.

The FAA uses this data to provide situational awareness to pilots and ensure navigational safety. For the situational awareness of pilots, it is absolutely imperative that aeronautical data on charts, diagrams, and publications be accurate and current.

FAA lines of business and stakeholders are working to improve the Chart Supplement. These improvements will provide significant benefits to the NAS. The Chart Supplement Revision Plan will eliminate redundant, duplicative and conflicting aeronautical information across the agency.

These charts are updated every 56 days. Separate indices show the coverage of VFR Charts (Conterminous U.S. and Alaska).

The Chart Supplement is a nine volume civil flight information publication updated every eight weeks by the Air Traffic Organization. It is designed for use with aeronautical charts covering the United States and its territories.
