Change the color, size, or format of bullets or numbers in a listClick a bullet or number in the list that you want to change.On the Home tab, under Paragraph, click the arrow next to Bullets or Numbering.Click the bullet or numbering list format that you want in the Bullet Library or the Numbering Library.

The size of the bullet symbol may change if you apply formatting to the paragraph mark that terminates the numbered or bulleted item. Select the whole paragraph and (re-)apply the font size. If you set this up with a paragraph style, selecting the whole paragraph and pressing Ctrl+SpaceBar would be the quickest fix.

Number your headingsOpen your document that uses built-in heading styles, and select the first Heading 1.On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose Multilevel List.Under List Library, choose the numbering style you would like to use in your document.

If you don't see the style that you want in the library, you can define a new bullet style.On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Bullets, and then click Define New Bullet. In Word for Windows: Click Symbol or Picture, and then choose any symbol or picture that you want to use.

If you just need the chapter number included in captions, on the On the Home Ribbon, in the Paragraph Group, click the Multilevel List icon and select the one with the words Chapter 1 in it from the List Library section. If you need subsections numbered (for example, 2.1, 2.2, 2.12, etc.)

Go to Tools Customize and choose the Commands tab. On the left, choose Styles. Click the default numbers button on your toolbar to select it.

Highlight the bulleted list for which you want to change the bullets to pictures. Click the down arrow on the Bullets button in the Paragraph section of the Home tab and select Define New Bullet from the drop-down menu. On the Define New Bullet dialog box, click Picture.
