You may have thought the reason your building permit was taking so long was because the building codes were getting too stringent? The main reason for a long wait in the processing of building permit applications usually centers around development engineering, utilities, planning and land use issues.

Once you fill out your application, you should expect to receive a building permit within two weeks if you are working on a residential project. On the other hand, approval process for a commercial project can take upwards of four weeks.

How long is a permit good for? A permit shall expire and become null and void if, 1) The work authorized by the permit is not started within 180 days of the date of permit issuance, or 2) The work is suspended or abandoned at any time after the work is started for a period of 180 days.

The plans will be checked for compliance with the California Code of Regulations Title 24, Zoning Ordinance, Health Code, etc. Normal processing takes four to six weeks. Any remaining fees, including the building permit fee, are payable prior to issuance of the building permit, as well as school fees, if applicable.

A building permit can be pulled online by selecting Manage Application, Pull Permit. You will need your process number. If you are the owner of the property, and you plan to complete a home project on your own, you will be required to complete the Owner/Builder test.

To get your building permit, you will need to file an application with the Building Department in the Pennsylvania town or city where you'll be performing the work. You will also need to submit drawn plans of the proposed construction with your application and pay the permit fee.
