The difference between a Sponsor and Signatory is that a Sponsor actively participated in writing the resolution and supports the resolution, while a Signatory wants to see the resolution be discussed but does not necessarily agree with its contents.

As of 31 January 2022, the Security Council has passed 2619 resolutions.

Sponsors: Contribute to the writing, ideas or spirit of the resolution. They must have been involved at some level in the drafting of the resolution. Signatories: Signatories are delegations that wish to see the resolution debated, (they do not have to agree with the resolution).

When the UN was created in 1945, there were only 51 Member States and resolutions were adopted by a vote. Today, in contrast, there are 193 Member States and roughly 80% of the General Assembly resolutions are adopted by consensus, that is, without taking a vote.

Resolutions adopted by the Economic and Social Council are numbered sequentially by year of adoption. Their document symbols begin with the prefix E/RES, followed by the year, followed by the number of the resolution: A/RES/Year/Number.

Draft resolutions and decisions are proposals submitted by one or more member of the Commissions, or by a member state representing a Group (e.g. EU, GRULAC etc.) (called the sponsors) for consideration by the Committee of the Whole and adoption by the Commission.

A United Nations General Assembly Resolution is a decision or declaration voted on by all member states of the United Nations in the General Assembly. General Assembly resolutions usually require a simple majority (50 percent of all votes plus one) to pass.
