United States ZIP codes are five numerical digits long. ZIP+4 codes, also known as add-on or plus-four codes, include four additional digits that identify a geographic segment within a ZIP code delivery area. The first digit in a ZIP code represents a defined group of U.S. states.

If you have the Zip code in cell A1 you can use the formula =TEXT(A1, "00000") to format the Zip code as 5 digits wide with leading zeros and then merge that instead of the numeric version.

To do this, you can do one of two things:Format the column as Text. Select your data range and press Ctrl+1 to launch the Format > Cells dialog. On the Number tab, click Text.Use the apostrophe character. You can type an apostrophe (') in front of the number, and Excel will treat it as text.

'Zip-code' Is a Verb Both, Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster list zip-code as a verb, and they keep it all lowercase and use a hyphen. It means to mark something with a ZIP code, as in "Be sure to zip-code that letter."

Displaying Zip/Postal Codes in Excel Right-click the cell and select Format Cells... Then, go to the Number tab, select Special from the Category section and then select Zip Code from the Type section and hit OK.

Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. , click the arrow, and then click More Number Formats. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Special. In the Type list, click Zip Code or Zip Code + 4.
