The three most common assessment tools are the Lexile Measures, the DRA Levels (Development Reading Assessment) and the Guided Reading levels. Each of these tools varies in complexity and administration, but each will attempt to help educators and parents gain insight into a child's reading skills.

Text levels are used to plan and deliver reading instruction. Leveled texts are an arrangement of books, both literary and informational, from easiest to hardest defined by a set of characteristics. Literary texts are stories, poems, and plays.

Count the total number of syllables in the sample, divide by the total number of words (100) and multiply by 84.6 (Or just multiply the number of syllables by 0.846 ? the results will be the same). Call this number y. Add x to y and subtract the sum from 206.835. The final result is the Reading Ease Score (see table).

The Flesch Kincaid Grade Level is a widely used readability formula which assesses the approximate reading grade level of a text. It was developed by the US Navy who worked with the Flesch Reading Ease. Previously, the Flesch Reading Ease score had to be converted via a table to translate to the reading grade level.

Reading Age is the term given to a child's reading ability when considered against the expectations for a child of their age.

Readability measures are primarily based on factors such as the complexity of the printed materials by measuring the number of words in the sentence and the number of letters or syllables per word (i.e., as a reflection of word frequency.) A ?score? reflects the grade level of the printed material.

Powers-Sumner-Kearl Formula [17] (i) Calculate L, the average sentence length (number of words ÷ number of sentences). Estimate the number of sentences to the nearest tenth, where necessary. (ii) Count N, the number of syllables per 100 words. So Reading Age = ( L × 0.0778 ) + ( N × 0.0455 ) + 2.7971 years.
