Copyright notice provides information to the public regarding copyright ownership. Notice is optional for works created after March 1, 1989, but is generally required for works created before that date.

US law no longer requires the use of a copyright notice, although placing it on a work does confer certain benefits to the copyright holder. Prior law did, however, require a notice, and the use of a notice is still relevant to the copyright status of older works.

All works first published or released in the United States before January 1, 1928, have lost their copyright protection, effective January 1, 2023.

Please be advised, as of December 30, 2022 , the general term of copyright protection in Canada changes from 50 to 70 years after the death of the author. This change does not affect works that are already in the public domain.

Generally speaking, copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years if the work was published in the U.S. after January 1, 1978. If the work had more than one author, the ?life of the author? is measured by the death of the last surviving author.
