A living will is a type of an advance directive. It is also a written document outlining your wishes for your health, to be followed if you cannot make decisions or express your wishes. It typically focuses on situations where you are terminally ill, and explains whether you would wish life-sustaining efforts be made.

Euthanasia is sometimes called aid-in-dying, mercy killing, death with dignity, etc. An advance directive is a document by which a person makes provisions for health care decisions in the event that, in the future, he/she becomes unable to make those decisions.

There are two main types of advance directive the Living Will and the Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. There are also hybrid documents which combine elements of the Living Will with those of the Durable Power of Attorney. A Living Will is the oldest type of health care advance directive.

A medical or health care power of attorney is a type of advance directive in which you name a person to make decisions for you when you are unable to do so. In some states this directive may also be called a durable power of attorney for health care or a health care proxy.

A DNR says that if your heart stops or you stop breathing, medical professionals should not attempt to revive you. This is very different from a health care proxy, which only goes into effect if you are unable to communicate your wishes for care.
