Fact: Most of us have some ambivalence about what we would want because treatment near the end of life can be complicated. Advance health care directives can always be changed if/when your wishes or circumstances change.

Advance directives are legally recognized documents and doctors must respect your known wishes, but doctors can always refuse to comply with your wishes if they have an objection of conscience or consider your wishes medically inappropriate.

Advance directives do not expire. An advance directive remains in effect until you change it. If you complete a new advance directive, it invalidates the previous one. You should review your advance directives periodically to ensure that they still reflect your wishes.

The major drawback to an advanced directive is that it is a piece of paper. A doctor might not know of its existence or it might not be produced in time to be of much use. There's also a possibility it won't be honored if it's from another state.

Talk about your values what makes your life worth living and what you consider quality of life. Approach the conversation wanting to share your wishes before you ask someone else to share their own wishes.
